BARE BONES WAXCAST 006 – John Scudamore

For Waxcast number 6 we welcome Manipulate’s John Scudamore to foray.  John delivers a very special extended mix ahead of the 20th birthday party with Sasha on the 5th November. We also asked John a few questions about the mix, and of course the Manipulate night:

How and why did you start Manipulate?

It was created as an outlet for a group of like-minded DJ friends to play music to like-minded people. It was easier to put on our own parties and program them how we wanted rather than ask other promoters to play constantly!

What is the music policy and ethos of the night?

Originally it was more Techno based, but over the years it has matured into more of a house affair. Expect anything from deep west coast house, minimal and some melodic deep progressive stuff thrown in for good measure. We don’t take ourselves too seriously if its good its good!

Manipulate has been held at several venues as well as playing for other parties over the years.  What has been your best venue?

Hendre Hall no question. The atmosphere is like no other venue I have experienced, everyone that played there was blown away!

You’ve booked some of the world’s biggest DJ’s to play for Manipulate, who has been your favourite?

There has been a few, Justin Robertson, Ralph Lawson and Yousef have all rocked it.

And which booking would you say made the best party?

Lottie was amazing, she was at the top of her game when we booked her (2004) and the party was electric.

Absolute carnage if Sasha is concerned, he never fails to deliver. For us the best at what he does for sure. It’s going to be special.

Tell us about the mix you’ve recorded?  What is the style and vibe you went for?
It was one I done over lockdown lol. It’s really deep with some music from friend’s labels and also some nice edits. It takes you on a journey so defo one for the afters!

Finally, after this Friday’s party, what are the plans for the future of Manipulate?
Let’s get this one out the way first, who knows. I was meant to stop 10 years ago and Sasha is playing on Friday so!!!

Sasha plays for Manipulate at Academi in Bangor om Friday 5th November.  Buy Tickets on Skiddle here!
