Bare Bones Waxcast 15 – Dan FraidSo

For Waxcast 15 we welcome Dan FraidSo to Bare Bones Wax. Dan grew up in London, and was obsessed with electronic music from a very young age. At the age of 11, with the aid of a free piece of software from Amiga Format magazine and his Amiga 500, his exploration of music production began. He spent his weekends grabbing records from the bargain bins at local record shops to play on his Dad’s beloved turntable until he got his own set of decks at age 14. He quickly found his passion with the house and garage sound of the mid 90’s- the era he still believes to be the one to beat, some 25+ years later. He spent his teens DJing and producing UK garage- but always with a lean towards the 4×4 sound rather than 2-step- playing on pirate radio stations and clubs across London.

By the early 2000’s Dan had gone back to the roots of this sound with a rediscovered love of straight up house music, and he then moved to Manchester where he still lives today. It was here that he met long term friend and production partner, Lee Daley and together they formed FraidSo, and started producing and DJing together all over Europe. He was quickly embedded within the thriving Manchester scene, and in 2008 launched the infamous club night, Content, with Lee and four other likeminded heads. The aim was to bing back what they felt was missing for the scene- a night all about the music. No gimmicks, no posers and an intimate space- with a crowd as up for it as they were throughout the 90’s. Content became widely recognised as one of the best small club nights in the country, winning and being nominated for numerous awards as such. As the inevitable family lives started taking over the group’s focus, Content threw its last party in 2014.

These days Dan still obsessively hunts out those obscure early and mid 90’s dubs and b-sides that went under the radar- his extensive record collection is like an encyclopedia of house and garage. He is equally obsessive about replicating the studio environments of the mid 90’s, ensuring every bit of hardware in his studio helps him to authentically create that golden era sound. This mix is, in the most part, more of a nod to more modern productions- but the influence is still as clear as ever….
